Centre d’Études Picasso à Paris

Le contexte :

Housed in the former stables of the Hôtel de Rohan, in the heart of the Marais district, the Centre d’Études Picasso is an exceptionally rich intellectual laboratory. Opened in 2025, this 720 m² space is dedicated to bringing together and protecting more than 200,000 archive items (letters, photographs, manuscripts) .

The challenge for architect Pascal Grasso was to transform this 18th-century utility space—characterised by low ceilings and paved floors—into an international research centre. The challenge was to establish a dialogue between the historical robustness of the building and the delicacy of Picasso’s work, while meeting the strict requirements of conservation and reading comfort for researchers.

The Kollectors solution

To bring Pascal Grasso’s vision to life, where light becomes the main building material, Kollectors put all its expertise in custom design and manufacturing to work. The collaboration crystallised around narrative and geometric lighting solutions:

  • A cubist tribute through the diamond shape: Kollectors brought to life specific diamond-shaped pendant lights. This motif echoes both the heraldic macles of the Hôtel de Rohan and the figure of Harlequin. These luminaires project a precise zenithal light above the mahogany consultation tables.
  • Integration and technical precision: For the libraries, Kollectors designed integrated linear lighting. This grazing light highlights the materiality of the documentary collections while ensuring optimal colour rendering (CRI) for studying the archives.
  • A brass centrepiece: In the boardroom, Kollectors created a monumental sculptural light fitting that links the historic gilding of the hotel with the contemporary minimalism of the project.

The result

Kollectors’ work has transformed a storage space into a true sensory showcase. The result is a perfect balance between technique and emotion:

  • An atmosphere conducive to thought: The lighting, combined with careful acoustic treatment, creates a hushed and contemplative atmosphere, essential for the concentration of art historians.
  • Highlighting the reliefs: The precision of the lighting solutions magnifies the contrasts between materials — between the solid oak parquet, brass and black medium — revealing the very substance of the architecture.
  • A living heritage: Thanks to this mastery of light, the Picasso Study Centre is no longer just a place of conservation, but a modern hub of exchange where the artist’s legacy is literally brought to light for future generations.
